Getting the right kind of help

The weekly recap from How To Train Your Doctor

Happy Sunday, Reader!

When things get medically complicated, having the right kind of help can go a long way. That’s what this week’s videos are about.

First up: The Medical Emergency Folder
You’ve got one, right?
It’s the folder you grab in a crisis—so EMTs, ER staff, or nursing facility staff know your wishes and medical treatment preferences.
I walk through the 3 documents to keep inside:

  1. A Healthcare Power of Attorney
  2. A POLST / MOLST form (especially if you don’t want CPR or intubation)
  3. An up-to-date medical history and medication list

Simple perhaps, but having these documents on hand can completely change the course of an emergency room visit or hospital stay!

Also: Why I Love Occupational Therapists
No, they don’t just help people get back to work or recover from wrist surgery. In palliative care, OTs are genius problem-solvers who help patients and caregivers live safely and more easily navigate the world around them. If you are living with a chronic illness (or caring for someone who is) and haven't ever had the chance to work with OT, I highly recommend discussing an OT referral with your medical team!

Catch these both on Instagram - and forward this to someone you know who might need a little extra help.

Have a wonderful week,

Matt

Goals of Share The weekly recap from How To Train Your Doctor Happy Sunday, Reader! This week was a major fanboy moment for me. I went live on Instagram with Sonya Dolan, co-founder of Mettle Health, to chat about all things palliative care. I've admired the Mettle Health team since they got going back in 2020. After all, we have a shared vision - make palliative care available for everyone who needs it. It was a joy to bust some palliative care myths, clarify how palliative care is different...

Goals of Share The weekly recap from How To Train Your Doctor Happy Sunday, Reader! This week, we tackled two common myths about palliative care: That it’s only for people who are terminally ill, and That patients have to be “ready” before they can receive it. Both are harmful misconceptions that delay people from getting the support they deserve. The third myth I didn’t have time to explore this week is all about acceptance. Too often, when someone says a patient “isn’t ready for palliative...

Goals of Share The weekly recap from How To Train Your Doctor Happy Sunday, Reader! This week's video highlighted a patient of mine who wanted to meet with palliative care because they were feeling "pretty good." We were able to dig into important topics because their illness was stable - the kind of conversation that's almost impossible to have in the middle of a crisis. Now I want to dig even deeper into the benefits of routine check-ins with palliative care during the good times. There's a...
